Lachlan Hile (0B 2016) passed away in his sleep on July 8, 2021 at the age of 23. He died of a brain haemorrhage and is survived by his loving and devoted parents Drs Mark and Nicole Hile and his siblings Angus and lsabella. Lachlan joined Shore Prep School in Year 5 in 2009. While he was best known at Shore as a gifted swimmer, Lachlan was also a talented double bass player who was a music scholar. He was also a handy rugby player and achieved excellent academic results. Lachlan was a perfectionist, constantly analysing and reflecting on his performance, and dedicated himself to the pursuit of excellence in all he did.
Lachlan was successful in the GPS, CIS, and NSW AII Schools Swimming Competitions, culminating in his selection in the 2015 Pacific School Games Team. For many years he also represented the City of Sydney Aquatic Club and Willoughby Swimming Club in the National Championships in the 100 metre and 200 metre Breaststroke and qualified to compete in the Australian Rio Olympic Trials.
In 2016, after five years of commitment to the Shore Swimming Team, Lachlan was appointed Captain of Swimming. At the GPS Captains' Dinner, attended by the Captain and Vice-Captain of Swimming from each school, Lachlan gave a humble and heartfelt speech outlining his love of swimming and his commitment to the sport, never mentioning the records he held or his incredible achievements.
Lachlan inspired many of the younger swimmers at Shore in his own understated way, encouraging them before their races and complementing them afterwards. He retains many school and GPS records but Lachlan will be most remembered for his quiet determination, his success, and his ability to successfully balance academic studies with his dedication to swimming.
Most recently, Lachlan was in the last semester of his Law Degree at the University of Sydney. His degree will be awarded posthumously. He was on the cusp of a new and exciting chapter in his life.
Lachlan will be fondly remembered by the Shore Swimming Team and the broader Shore Community.
